1.   Choose a target group

  • relying on your prior knowledge and personal experience?
  • investigate only people like you?
  • choose a key informant or guide?
2. Early into your study:
  • Discuss any problems in how to participate yet also observe.
  • Combine visits and observations with periods of withdrawal and reflection to make sense of your observations.. Avoiding both ‘going native’ and ‘observer effects’.

3   Keep a research diary or log, recording problems and 'threats to validity'
